Vodia PBX

This guide explains how to create and configure a connection between Ringotel and a Vodia PBX.

Written by Alex Brainin

1. Create a new connection in Ringotel

Open the required organization in the Ringotel Administration Portal and create a new connection. Select Connect to a PBX server and complete the connection fields as described below.

Connection name

Enter any name that will help you identify this connection in the Ringotel Administration Portal. The connection name does not need to match the tenant name or DNS address in Vodia.

For example: VodiaPBX

Domain or IP address

In Vodia, open Tenants and locate the required tenant. Copy the address displayed in the DNS column and enter it in the Domain or IP address field in Ringotel.

For example: ringotelvodiatest.vodia-pbx.com

Protocol and SIP port

In Vodia, open Settings → SIP → Settings

Check the SIP transport protocol and port configured on the PBX. Then select the same protocol in Ringotel and enter the corresponding SIP port.

For example, if Vodia uses UDP on port 5060, configure:

Protocol: SIP (UDP)

SIP port: 5060

Reformat inbound numbers

This setting is optional. In most cases, +E.164 is recommended because it normalizes incoming telephone numbers into the international format: +CountryCodeNumber.

This can improve contact matching in Ringotel. Available options include:

  • Disabled — Ringotel keeps the number in the format received from Vodia.

  • +E.164 — converts the number to the international E.164 format.

  • National (strip + and country code) — removes the + sign and country code.

  • National with leading 0 — converts the number to a national format with a leading zero.

Configure Advanced settings

Expand Advanced settings in the Ringotel connection form.

Outbound Proxy

Leave the Outbound Proxy fields empty unless the Vodia installation specifically requires SIP traffic to be sent through a separate outbound proxy.

When an outbound proxy is required, enter its address and authentication credentials provided by the PBX administrator.

Audio codecs

The codecs enabled in Ringotel must also be supported and enabled in Vodia.
To check the Vodia codec configuration, open:Settings → SIP → Audio
Review the enabled codecs under the Vodia codec preferences.
In Ringotel, enable only the codecs that are supported by both systems. For example:

  • G.711 U-law

  • G.711 A-law

  • G.722

  • G.729

  • Opus

The exact codec selection depends on the Vodia configuration.

Add Ringotel server IP addresses to Vodia

It is recommended to add the Ringotel server IP addresses to the Vodia access list.

In Vodia, open: Settings → Security → Access

Select the Add tab.
In the Add IPv4 entry section:

  1. Enter the Ringotel server IP address in the IP Address field.

  2. Select Enabled as the entry type.

  3. Optionally, enter a comment such as Ringotel server.

  4. Click Create.

Repeat these steps for each required Ringotel server IP address.

You can find the current Ringotel server IP addresses here: Configure Firewall to work with Ringotel

Tip:

You only need to add the IP addresses for the region where your Ringotel organization is hosted. You do not need to add addresses from all available regions.

After completing the configuration, save the Ringotel connection.

Add a user to Ringotel

To add a user, you mainly need the extension number and SIP password configured for that extension in Vodia.

In Vodia, open the required tenant, then go to Accounts → Extensions

Open the extension that you want to add. In the Account Profile section, you can find:

  • Account number(s) — enter this value in the PBX extension field in Ringotel.

  • SIP password — reveal the password and enter it in the SIP password field in Ringotel.

Then, in Ringotel:

  1. Select the Vodia connection created earlier.

  2. Enter a value in the Display name field. This field is required. You can enter the user’s name or use the same value as the extension number.

  3. Enter the Vodia Account number in the PBX extension field.

  4. Enter the Vodia SIP password in the SIP password field.

  5. Click Create user.

If the entered credentials are correct, Ringotel will create the user, show that the extension has registered successfully, and provide the credentials required to log in to the Ringotel application.

Configure Parking Slots

In Vodia, Park Orbits correspond to Parking slots in Ringotel. Before adding parking slots in Ringotel, you need to create the corresponding Park Orbits in Vodia.

Create a Park Orbit in Vodia

Open the required tenant and go to Accounts → Park Orbits

Click Add, then enter:

  • Account number(s) — the extension number that will be used for the Park Orbit.

  • Display name — the name used to identify the Park Orbit.

Click Save.

Repeat these steps for each Park Orbit that you want to make available in Ringotel.

Assign Park Orbits to a Vodia extension

Return to Accounts → Extensions and open the extension that should be able to see and use the Park Orbit.

Them go to Monitoring and call pickup and under Explicitly specify park orbit preference, click Add and select the Park Orbits that should be available to this extension.

Repeat this configuration for every extension that should have access to the required Park Orbits.

Add Parking Slots in Ringotel

In the Ringotel Admin Shell, open the Vodia connection and go to Features → Visual Call Park

Under Parking slots, enter:

  • Label — the name that will be displayed for the parking slot in the Ringotel application.

  • Extension number — the Account number configured for the corresponding Park Orbit in Vodia.

Click Add slot to add additional parking slots when required.

After all parking slots have been added, save the connection settings.

Configure BLF and Call Pickup

Note:

If no Vodia groups are configured with BLF view only or BLF view and pickup permissions, Vodia allows users to monitor other extensions and pick up their calls by default.

Therefore, creating a separate BLF group in Vodia is not required for BLF to work in Ringotel.

It is recommended to keep the default configuration unless you need to restrict which extensions users can monitor or pick up.

Optional: Configure a BLF group in Vodia

To configure BLF permissions for specific users, open the required tenant and go to Settings → Groups

Click Add, then configure:

  • Group name — enter a name for the group.

  • Group members — select which accounts belong to the group:

    • All accounts

    • Specific accounts

    • All except specific accounts

Under Features, configure the required permission:

  • BLF view and pickup — allows the group members to view BLF status and pick up calls.

  • BLF view only — allows the group members to view BLF status without picking up calls.

Select which accounts the permission applies to, then save the group.

Add BLF indicators for PBX features in Ringotel

In the Ringotel Administration Portal, open the Vodia connection and go to:

Features → Speed Dial Numbers & Features BLF Indicators

Important:

This section is intended only for configuring BLF monitoring of PBX features and feature codes. It must not be used to configure BLF monitoring for users’ internal extension numbers. For this, please create deactivated users instead.

Under BLF buttons, enter:

  • Label — the name displayed in the Ringotel application.

  • BLF code — the PBX feature code that should be monitored.

Click Add and repeat the process for each required PBX feature.

Note:

For BLF monitoring of internal user extensions, the corresponding extensions must be created in Ringotel as deactivated users.
